About The Hague
The Hague seems determined to confuse overseas visitors. Commonly referred to in Holland as “Den Haag”, the city was originally named ‘s Gravenhage, and can still be found described as such on many official documents and maps. As the third largest city in the Netherlands, The Hague is the official seat of government, home to several members of the Dutch Royal family, the base for most foreign embassies and many major companies, as well as the home of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
The Hague’s layout is spacious and because of the incorporation of large noble estates, the creation of various parks and the use of green zones around natural streams, it is a very green city, although you will find several small, medieval streets and old canals in the city centre, where the Binnenhof (inner court) is a favourite destination for visitor because of its distinctive architecture.
The Hague is easily reached from most anywhere in the Netherlands, and with the international airport Schiphol just 30 minutes away by road or train, it is an ideal base for many overseas business people. It has a well-known beach resort, Scheveningen, with wide sandy beaches, as well as a pier, harbour and lighthouse. The world famous miniature city Madurodam houses numerous, incredibly detailed and working 1:25 scale replicas of Dutch landmarks and historical cities and is a must for visitors of any age!
The Hague has many prosperous suburbs such as Voorburg, Zoetermeer, Rijswijk and Leidschendam, with excellent transport connections to the city centre, as well as to the nearby city of Rotterdam. The Hague has the highest concentration of international schools in the Netherlands, as well as a large variety of higher education at all different levels (vocational, professional, graduate and postgraduate) in English.
